There lived a Rishi called ‘Bhringi Munivar’ in the nearby hill and was performing penance worshipping Lord Shiva. This hill later came to be known as ‘Bringi Malai’. Today it is known as ‘Parangi Malai’ or ‘St Thomas Mount’. Pleased by Bhringi Rishi’s worship, Lord Shiva appeared to him in the form of Nandi in this holy place and hence God here is known as Nandeeswarar. Hence a temple for Nandeeswarar has come up.
History of the Temple
This temple is the oldest one in Chennai dating back to 950 AD. The temple has two entrances one in the east, and the other in south. There is a tank situated outside the southern entrance which is now not in use. This ancient yet small and beautiful temple has a very holy ambience with ancient architecture and sculptures. While going through this place Sri Chandrashekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal Periyaval asked people to conduct regular pujas. The special feature of this temple is that on all Pradosham days a cow goes round the sanctum. The temple history, slogas and Thiruppavai are printed on the walls of the temple. This is an ancient temple built by Chola King named Aadhani. There are marvelous carvings Kannapanayanar, Kamadhenu, Maruthi, Narasimha and Vinayaka on pillars of this temple. Vilvam tree or Bilva Vriksha is the Sthala Vriksham of this temple.
Other Shrines in the Temple
The temple houses separate shrines for Vinayaka, Nagadevathai, Vishnu, Subrahmanyar, Bhairavar, Brahma, Durgai, Nandikeswarar and Navagrahas. The idol of Nandeeswarar (Siva lingam) faces east and the Goddess Avudainayagi faces south
Special Poojas and Festivals
Special poojas are conducted on days like Pradhosham, Shivaratri, Somawar (Mondays). Arudra darshan is yet another famous religious event here. The special feature of this temple is that on all Pradosham days a cow goes round the sanctum.
Other special pujas are conducted on days significant to Lord Subrahmanya and Lord Ganesha. People who are facing obstacles in getting married come here and worship and present two rose garlands to this temple for five Pradhosham days. It is said these obstacles are removed and they get married soon.
How Adambakkama and Guindy got its names
During later days a Chola king called Aadhani Cholan who was ruling this part of the land constructed this temple. As this territory was part of his then kingdom, this place was known as “Aadhanippakkam” which gradually later became as “Aadhambakkam”. It is said that Bhringi Rishi kept his pitcher, a Kamandalam like jug. In Tamil it is called Kindi at a certain place during prayers. Over a period of time this place has come to be known as Kindy which gradually became ‘Guindy’.
