Tirumala is surrounded by several water bodies, most of which invariably get linked to characters from mythology and Indian religious texts, thereby giving them a sacred character. Tumburu teertham is another such water body, which is linked to the story of Thumburu, a Gandharva who cursed his wife for her laziness.

According to the story, the wife became a toad who had to survive in the pond till sage Augusthya came there to her rescue. While the sage explained the significance of the pond to his disciples, the toad recovered her Gandharva form.
